For more than a decade, the American Alliance of Museums' Museum Financial Information survey was the best source of data about museum operations and finances in the United States. Now, Museum Benchmarking Online (MBO) takes data collecting and benchmarking to a whole new level. Museums of every type and size, from all over the country, can use MBO to enter data on operations, staffing, attendance, finances and more; compare their performance to national norms or peer institutions; and generate customized reports for staff, board members and other stakeholders. All the data that you provide will remain secure and anonymous. Your data will never be identified by the name of your museum. Plus, it's easy to get started!
Full Benchmark Access
This is the best option for most museums. Full Benchmark Access provides you and your museum with all the benefits of the MBO system. You will be able to enter data about your museum, compare* your responses to other museums' (using your own criteria to identify peer groups) and download customized PowerPoint slides containing basic metrics, key performance indicators and other relevant data for planning and advocacy.
*Note that museums must enter data in 50% of the data fields before they can start comparing themselves to other museums or generate customized reports.

Data Contributor
This free option allows you to contribute and save information about your museum but you will NOT be able to compare your performance to your peer institutions. The American Alliance of Museums will use the information you contribute to promote the welfare of the entire museum field through data analyses for museum managers, supporters and advocates – including public officials and the press. Data Contributors always have the option of upgrading to Full Benchmark Access at any time.

Non-Contributor
This is the best choice for industry partners, consultants, funders, planners or anyone else who is interested in the museum field but does not have data to contribute to the MBO system. Non-Contributors have full access to aggregate data about museums. They can analyze groups of museums by applying as many as seven different filters to the database. They can also generate customized PowerPoint slides. This is the only option available to individual museum professionals and non-U.S. institutions.

Questions?
The Sign-up Process After clicking the appropriate sign-up button, you'll be taken to a new page. There we will ask you for information about you and your museum, including the museum's Alliance membership status and unique Alliance identification number. (Non-Contributors will need an individual or institutional ID number.) Even if your museum is not an Alliance institutional member, it probably has an Alliance ID number. If you need to check your museum's membership status and ID number, contact us at membership@aam-us.org or (202) 289-1818. We need this information to manage your access to MBO and to make sure that we charge you the correct price. Payment must be made by credit card. Once we verify your registration details and process the payment, you will receive an email with your user name, password and other information about getting started. The whole process usually takes just minutes.
More questions? If you have additional questions about Museum Benchmarking Online, please contact the American Alliance of Museums at (202) 289-1818 or at benchmark@aam-us.org.
Thank you for your interest in MBO!
